Wedding Ceremony Ideas

Creating a Personal and Meaningful Day

Your wedding ceremony sets the tone for the rest of your Big Day!

It is arguably the most important part of your wedding, the moment when you and your partner publicly express your love and commitment to each other in the presence of your closest friends and family.

Traditional wedding ceremonies hold their charm, and many couples seek to infuse their own, distinct, personalities and unique love stories into the wedding ceremony.

In this detailed guide, I’ll delve into creating a wedding ceremony that will imbue your wedding ceremony with a personalised and profoundly meaningful touch.

How to Make Your Ceremony Personal to You

Write Personal Vows

One of the most powerful ways to personalise your wedding ceremony is to write your own vows.

Writing your own vows can be a deeply moving and authentic way to personalise your wedding ceremony. This is the moment when you express your unique promises and declarations of love to each other.

Speak from the heart, recount your journey as a couple, and articulate your dreams for the future.

Personal vows are more than just words; they are a profound reflection of your relationship, your shared experiences, and your dreams for the future. They serve as a testament to your unique love story and create a lasting memory for both you and your guests. Here’s why personal vows hold such significance:

Authenticity: Personal vows are authentic expressions of your love, devoid of clichés or generic phrases. They reflect your genuine emotions and the depth of your connection.

Uniqueness: Your vows are a reflection of your one-of-a-kind love story. No one else in the world shares the exact same experiences and emotions as you do.

Memorability: Personal vows make your wedding ceremony unforgettable. They leave a lasting impression on your guests and resonate with them long after the ceremony ends.

Need help or inspiration? Vow writing advice, help and suggestions are included in the cost of your Fab Ceremony.

Incorporate Cultural and Religious Traditions

Infuse depth and meaning into your ceremony by incorporating cultural or religious traditions that resonate with you and your partner.

Drawing from cultural or religious traditions that hold significance for you and your partner can add layers of depth and meaning to your ceremony. Whether it’s a Handfasting ceremony, a Hindu seven-step ceremony, or a jumping of the broom tradition, these customs can honour your heritage and values.

Select a Location with Personal Significance

Choose a wedding location that holds personal significance for both you and your partner.

Selecting a venue with personal meaning can profoundly affect your ceremony. Whether it’s the park where you had your first date, a family garden, or a cosy cabin in the woods, the location itself can add a layer of personal history to your ceremony.

Curate a Personalised Music Selection

Select music that tells the story of your relationship and resonates with both of you.

The music you choose can be a powerful way to personalise your ceremony. Select songs that hold special meaning for you as a couple – perhaps the first song you danced to or a track that encapsulates your love story.

Involve Loved Ones

Include family members and friends in your ceremony, making it a shared celebration.

Incorporate loved ones into your ceremony by having family members or friends read meaningful passages or poems. You can also ask a close friend or family member to officiate your wedding, adding a personal touch to the proceedings.

Narrate Your Unique Love Story

Share the story of your love with your guests, adding intimacy and personality to your ceremony.

Share your love story with your guests. How did you meet? What made you fall in love? What challenges have you overcome together? This narrative can be woven into your ceremony, making it more intimate and personal.

Plant a Unity Tree

Symbolise the growth of your love with a unity tree instead of traditional unity ceremonies.

Instead of a traditional unity candle or sand ceremony, consider planting a unity tree. Combining soil from your childhood homes and watering the tree together symbolises the growth of your love and your shared life.

Release Sky Lanterns or Butterflies

Add a beautiful and symbolic touch to your ceremony by releasing sky lanterns or butterflies.

Releasing sky lanterns or butterflies can be a breath-taking and symbolic gesture. It signifies the release of worries and the beginning of a new chapter in your life together.

Handfasting Ceremony

Symbolise your union and connection through a handfasting ceremony.

A handfasting ceremony involves binding your hands together with ribbons or cords while reciting vows. It’s a lovely way to symbolise your union and connection.

Create a Time Capsule

Seal mementoes, letters, and predictions for your future in a time capsule during your ceremony.

Create a time capsule filled with mementoes from your wedding day, letters to each other, and predictions for your future. Seal it during your ceremony and plan to open it on a significant anniversary.

Include Your Pets

Incorporate your beloved pets into your ceremony.

If you have beloved pets, consider including them in your ceremony. They can serve as ring bearers or simply be present to share in the love and joy of the day.

Design a Personalised Ceremony Backdrop

Create a backdrop that visually narrates your love story.

Design a backdrop that visually narrates your love story. Incorporate photographs, love quotes, or a timeline of your relationship. This backdrop can serve as a beautiful focal point during your ceremony.

Renew Your Vows

Celebrate your enduring love by renewing your vows during your wedding ceremony.

If you’ve been together for a while or have faced significant challenges as a couple, consider renewing your vows during your wedding ceremony. It’s a touching way to recommit to each other and celebrate your enduring love.

Surprise Performances

Surprise your guests with a special performance that expresses your love.

Surprise your guests with a special performance. Sing a song, recite a poem, or even choreograph a dance to express your love for each other.

Create an Interactive Experience

Involve your guests in your ceremony, creating an interactive experience.

Design your ceremony to be interactive. Involve your guests by asking them to share their well wishes or participate in a group activity that symbolises unity.

Exchange Love Letters

Exchange love letters in addition to your vows, sealing them in a box for future opening.

In addition to your vows, exchange love letters during your ceremony. Seal them in a box to be opened on your first anniversary or during challenging times in your marriage.

Remember

Your wedding ceremony is a deeply personal and emotional moment in your life. By incorporating these creative ideas and infusing your personalities and love story into the proceedings, you’ll create a ceremony that is not only beautiful but also deeply meaningful.

Your wedding day should reflect the unique bond you share as a couple, and these personalised touches will make it a day you and your guests will cherish forever. Embrace the opportunity to celebrate your love in a way that feels authentic and genuine to both of you.

We were looking for a celebrant to do our ceremony for our second wedding (1st one was heavily restricted by that pandemic). We looked around at a few celebrants but when we came across Gary, it just felt like the right fit. We met and spoke a few times before the big day and filled in a couples questionnaire so we could get to know each other and so Gary could really get a sense of what we were like as a couple and bring that into the ceremony. It was all worth it because, on the big day, it felt like we had somebody who was really invested in us to tell our story. The ceremony made us laugh and think and feel, it just reflected us and our story.

Gary offered for us to see the script beforehand and make as many changes as we wanted so that we could make sure it was just right but we chose not to see most of it because we wanted it to be a surprise and I’m so glad we did. It was in Gary’s good hands and meant we could hear it all for the first time along with our guests and genuinely laugh and experience it with them. We got lots of our guests saying how brilliant Gary and the ceremony were.

If you’re looking for a celebrant to authentically tell your story in a ceremony with a good few laughs thrown in, Gary’s your man.

Why Eloping Together is A Great Idea!

Why Eloping Is A Wonderful Option for UK Couples

Eloping is a wonderful idea and if there was ever a time to elope, it is now. With many couples being forced to shorten the guest list, perhaps the best way is to run away and get married – just the two of you!

Imagine getting married, just you and your love, in a castle, at a vineyard, on the beach or at a lighthouse. The United Kingdom is full of fantastic wedding venues for couples who are running away to get married. Your options are endless!

The romantic notion of eloping is sometimes dismissed by couples who know their friends and family would be disappointed or upset at not being invited to their best day ever. Understandably they would love to be there and if you expected a huge wedding, it does take some time to move your mindset to the joy of eloping.

The silver lining of the pandemic (yes, even a pandemic has some bright sides if you look hard enough) is that eloping is a way to stay safe and still have a gorgeous wedding.

Aside from being wildly romantic, there are many other incredible benefits to eloping to tie the knot.

Here are just some of the beautiful reasons to elope.

Quality Time Together

When you elope, you have quality time together, meaning you can connect in a way that isn’t possible if you are entertaining 100 other beautiful people. You can be giddy in love and relax and be yourselves when you can focus on only each other. From morning till evening, it’s just the two of you creating memories together on the day you will become Mr. and Mrs.

Most couples who elope get ready together. The groom might leave the room before the bride puts on the dress, or he might be the one helping her do it up. You will take your time getting ready, talking, and laughing about the ceremony coming up and getting excited about the day. You might enjoy a drink together, then hold hands and walk to the ceremony. That’s where I’ll be waiting for you and trust me – I get as hyped for wedding ceremonies with 100 guests or no guests.

After the ceremony and some gorgeous photos, you will have the rest of the evening to celebrate blissfully just the two of you. You won’t have to listen to Uncle Mike’s 45-minute-long speech about what a cute baby you were, get nervous about the first dance or deal with huge bar tabs. But you will cut your wedding cake. Couples eloping are ordering small cakes and adding beautiful details like cake toppers and flowers because everyone loves cake, right?

The Financial Savings

When you elope, you are often winning financially.

Weddings are expensive affairs and often cost more than initially expected. The money you would have to spend on food and drink is totally freed up when you choose to elope. Also, you save on the smaller details like wedding stationery, wedding favours and signage. All these smaller costs do add up.

Brides and grooms are putting all that extra money into luxury wedding items such as elaborate flowers, more extended videography coverage or a more luxurious honeymoon. Just because the guest numbers are smaller doesn’t mean you need to sacrifice the beautiful wedding decorations, services and venue. Couples are spending more on these things now.

Flexibility with the wedding budget is a fantastic benefit of eloping. Suddenly that designer dress might be possible, or you can save money for the future.

The Venue Options

If you are getting married just you and your love, the venue options are wide open compared to what you would have if you had 50 or 100 guests. You can get married anywhere from an art gallery to a private flower garden or even a mountain top. Free-spirited souls in love are getting creative with their elopement wedding venues and it’s exciting when the moon is the limit.

We are blessed to have so many excellent venue options in the UK. I’ve also noticed venues are being flexible with couples where they can get married on the property. For example, a venue might always have wedding ceremonies in a specific area but for couples eloping who might prefer another place, they are accommodating their wishes as much as possible. Also, more venues are creating elopement packages for the increased demand and trend of eloping.

Covid Considerations

Hopefully, couples wishing to have large weddings can do so soon. But for now, in these uncertain times, it’s hard to know the numbers of people that will be allowed at social gatherings in the future. Eloping is a safe way (for your health and peace of mind) to plan your wedding ceremony without the stress and worry that it might be postponed or cancelled.

The Romance

In the beginning, I mentioned romance, but it has to be mentioned again. Really, what is more romantic and intimate than a dreamy elopement? An elopement in the UK is the perfect way to get married if you want to have your wedding your way.

You can always share the stunning photos and video with your friends and family or even have a reception bash later in the year. I even know a couple who had a micro wedding and now are planning a massive vow renewal on their fifth anniversary in 2025. This might be an emerging trend and to me, it sounds like a great idea!

Personally, I adore elopements. I make sure the celebrant-led wedding ceremony is beautifully designed to reflect your love story with wording that fits your style as a couple. The joy, excitement and love at an elopement is just as elevated as it is for a wedding with 100 guests.

Love is love and as long as you are both there with open minds and hopeful hearts, that is all that matters.

4 Tips to Help You Plan Your Destination Wedding

When it comes to planning your dream destination wedding, saying yes to the location where your nuptials will take place is just the first step. Not only is the venue on your mind, but all of the other wedding essentials (we’ll get to those!)

Whether you are coming from the next country or from halfway across the world, destination weddings require a little more planning and attention to detail. If you’re in the beginning stages of planning and wondering where to start, I’m going to give you a few pointers on the things to keep in mind to ensure that your destination wedding is as fab as you have imagined!

Hire a planner

While it is not essential, it will certainly relieve a lot of unnecessary stress and be an investment you won’t regret! Hiring a planner is even more beneficial if you don’t have the time or know-how when it comes to planning a wedding (which can sometimes feel like a part-time job in itself.)

When a destination is involved and it comes to traveling for your big day, having someone who can oversee all of your wedding and travel plans can allow you to enjoy the day to its fullest. The last thing you want is to have your wedding day coming to an end and look back and to not have enjoyed the process.

When you begin the process of searching for a planner, ensure that this person either has experience in planning destination weddings (very important as there are so many different moving pieces involved), or they are located where your wedding is taking place.

A few of the advantages of hiring a wedding planner for your ceremony destination are:

If it is in a country where they speak a different language (like in Spain where the native tongue is Spanish), your planner will be able to assist you in navigating any contracts and conversations between vendors

saving money on travel for your planner

your planner will have recommendations and connections to the best local vendors which can save you money if they are able to offer special discounts

knowledge of the area when it comes to nearby accommodations like hotels and airports

Go all-inclusive

When you’re searching for a hotel for your holiday, you’re going to be drawn to something that has a pool and a complimentary breakfast bar in the morning included in the package, right? The same goes for booking your venue!

Looking at all of the wedding inspiration on Pinterest can be fun until you start penciling in all of the details that go into planning that dream destination ceremony, it’s probably more than you initially thought! Finding a venue that is all-inclusive (or gets as close to it as possible) will not only make planning your wedding easier but could save you money in some areas that will allow you to put that saved change towards another area like your honeymoon!

A few of the essentials to making your wedding day complete are going to be rentals (like tables, chairs, decor), and catering (both food and drinks.) If you’re needing to rent chairs for the ceremony or reception, you are going to need to locate a rental vendor and coordinate the drop-off, delivery, and pick up of these items. If needing to bring in outside catering, you’ll also need to locate a catering company that can accommodate your guest count, plus coordinates with your venue in regards to how the catering company will serve your guests. Those are just two small aspects of your wedding. Sound tiring yet? Don’t let these details defeat you!

You can alleviate a lot of this stress and confusion that can sometimes come along with it by finding a venue that will include many of the above items. This is not to say that you can’t or shouldn’t rent outside items like tableware or decor if that’s what you would like to do to bring your dream wedding to life, but it will take a lot off your plate if those items are already included.

Plus, if you will be having guests travel in from out of town (no matter how far), having a venue that also offers hotel accommodations can be a major plus! If you’ve found a venue that doesn’t offer hotel accommodations and you have guests traveling in for your wedding, don’t let that stop you from booking! The venue will most likely have recommendations of places nearby that your guests can book out, and sometimes will have connections with those hotels that can offer a special deal if a certain number of rooms are reserved for the event (don’t be afraid to ask!)

Many venues also have an in-house coordinator that will be by your side leading up to your wedding day to answer any questions regarding the venue and can seamlessly work with your planner (if you have chosen to work with one) to ensure your day is everything you imagined!

There are so many venues in Spain that have all-inclusive options! If you’re looking for a beachside wedding that includes not only your tables, chairs, linens, and customizable catering options, but also an in-house planner that can assist in hotel and flight organization, check out Nuevo & Sur on Los Alamos Beach in Malaga!

Location, Location, Location!

There’s a little more that goes into choosing your venue than just loving what it looks like, it’s also all about the location. When looking at possible venue options, look at what is located around it.

-Is it in a large city that is near an airport?

-Are there hotel accommodations nearby for your guests (or does your venue offer a hotel option like mentioned above?)

-Do the nearby hotels offer complimentary (or affordable) taxi or transportation services to your venue?

-Are there other activities around that your guests could take part in in the days leading up to or after the wedding?

These are all questions to consider when picking the location of your venue!

Remember that not only do you want this to be an enjoyable experience for you but for your guests as well—especially if they’re traveling from afar to celebrate your union. The more options available to them when it comes to arranging their plans, the happier you and your guests will be!

If you’re looking for a venue that not only offers a couple of different ceremony locations to choose from on-site but also offers hotel accommodations as well as nearby activities such as beautiful golf courses, ask about hosting your wedding at Palacete de Cázulas in Andalucia!

Hiring a FAB Celebrant

Not everyone has choosing their wedding celebrant at the top of their list and I often ask myself, why not? We are the ones leading you as the soon-to-be-married couple through your ceremony, making both you and your guests laugh and/or shed a tear, and making it an overall memorable experience for everyone coming together to celebrate your love with you.

The last thing that you want after perfecting all of the details of your big day is to be stressing your way through the ceremony with one eye shut, holding your breath at the altar hoping that everything your celebrant is choosing to say will be true and meaningful to you as a couple.

By choosing Fab Ceremonies, I am here for you and to relieve any worries you may have about your nuptials. What will be said? Will it be true to me and my partner? Will it represent who we are as a couple? Not to worry, your ceremony is completely custom written for you because this is your wedding and we are doing it your way. My job is to tell your story, your job is to enjoy the day!

I am all about taking the time throughout this process to connect with you as a couple to get to know you and for you to get to know me. I’m there for you every step of the process leading up to the wedding day (even assisting in writing vows or speeches if needed) to perfect your bespoke wedding ceremony and answer any questions you may have.

On your wedding day itself, I will be there to communicate with all vendors including your wedding planner, photographer, and anyone else who is playing a part in your big day to ensure everything goes to plan and I deliver a ceremony that no one will forget!

Alternative Wedding Themes

After the kind of year we’ve all had, we can understand if you want to live a little. Your wedding, for one, is a celebration that should be out of the norm. We don’t believe in Cliché weddings here at Fab ceremonies. We believe that you can and should go beyond the same old ideas when it comes to your celebration.

We’ve got you a bit covered when it comes to that. This is a creative list of nine wedding themes that are out of the ordinary. You can choose to use any of these alternative wedding ideas to plan your wedding or use them as inspiration. The decision is yours. Read on to find out about them and what they entail.

An Animal Wedding Theme

If you have pets that you love or you’re big on animals, you could go with this idea. If you or your partner is an animal scientist or works in the zoo, it would make it even better. This wedding theme would be a great way to personalize your wedding and involve your pets. Just remember to make sure that your wedding venue is animal friendly. You could even choose to have your wedding in an actual zoo!

Renting an animal is also a thing we’ve seen couples that apply this theme do. This is useful if you don’t have any pets. You can include them in your photos during your wedding photo session. We’ve seen animals as great ring bearers too.

With your décor, there are many ways to incorporate this theme. From your table names and details to your favours, you can include animal designs. For wedding gifts, you can ask for presents that are totally out of the norm. We’ve seen couples ask for a donation to a wildlife shelter as wedding gifts or favours.

An Art Deco Wedding

This theme takes its inspiration from the glam of Paris and New York in the 1920s and 30s. It’s an elegant theme with elaborate décor and outfits, so be ready to go all the way for this one. Start by choosing an elegant venue for your celebration. It should give you Great Gatsby vibes. Then go for wedding colours that are bright, bold and colourful. Flash accessories would also work.

A Bohemian Wedding Theme

Boho weddings have become popular over the years and for good reasons too. They’re based on self-creativity and have this relaxed free atmosphere to them. What people especially love about Boho weddings is how they utilize natural surroundings and bright colours. The dress codes are less formal, too, and mismatched bridesmaids usually perfect the theme.

An Eco-Friendly Wedding

The world is fast moving to the point of no return when it comes to global warming. One of the ways that we can slow that down is by being eco-conscious in every aspect of our lives. So, of course, weddings are not left out.

You can have an alternative wedding that is eco-friendly. The key to having this type of wedding is to cut on your energy footprint. Use as many recycled items as you can and products that have a low impact on the environment. The more biodegradable it is, the better.

You can also go for a plastic-free wedding and a sustainable honeymoon too. Just make sure that whatever you do does not have a negative impact on the planet.

Minimalist Wedding

In these times, with the pandemic raging, a minimalist wedding is probably a great idea. This theme strips away all the excesses when it comes to weddings and leaves just the bare essentials.

For example, you can forgo all the drama and stick to a neutral or monochromatic colour scheme. Some couples also choose to have a few standout items as part of their décor to balance things a bit.

Retro Wedding Theme

The vibes to replicate at your retro wedding are nostalgic and old fashioned. Be bold with your style, and work with bright colours as much as you can. Don’t forget to throw in a few throwback details from that era.

For example, you could serve coke in those signature glass bottles. There are many other décor ideas that you can look into to help you portray this theme perfectly. An art gallery would be the perfect venue for a wedding like this.

Rock Wedding Theme

For a rock wedding theme, there are many ways you could go. Incorporate lots of black and white in your celebration and make sure that your attires have an edge to it. Other details that would make this theme include a street style gown, leather jackets, and jeans. The right kind of music would also play a part, so don’t think it’s too much to hire a rock band. You’ll all have a swell time with this one.

Rustic Wedding Theme

The rustic wedding theme is similar to the Boho wedding, but it is a little bit more traditional. It, however, also uses a natural colour palette and natural elements in its décor. Probably a lot more than the Boho wedding. A barn is a perfect venue for this kind of wedding, and you should also use lots of wooden details. Please stick to the beauty of nature heavily when it comes to this wedding theme.

TV/Film Wedding Theme

If you’re both huge fans of a TV Show, you can represent that at your wedding. All you have to do is choose it as your wedding theme and go from there. We’ve seen many couples go with the Games of Thrones and Harry Potter theme. Create an atmosphere at your celebration that memorably represents the theme using your décor, fashion, and other wedding details. Best of luck!!!

Here at Fab Ceremonies, we believe in unique wedding celebrations. So, if you’re planning an out-of-the-norm celebration in the UK and need a Celebrant, I am your guy. From Rock weddings to Boho celebrations, Retro weddings, and more, we’ve got you covered.

For a long time, British weddings were a religious affair. The couples woke up in separate homes, got ready, and headed to church. At the church, the ordained minister carried out the ceremony and gave the wedding blessings.

We’ve come a long way from those kinds of weddings, however. For one thing, we now have couples that are not affiliated with a particular religion. They still want and deserve a meaningful and personalised ceremony.

There is also the fact that sometimes church weddings can be restrictive. You may not be allowed to dress a certain way. There could also be restrictions on your hair, music, and wedding rituals. This is where a celebrant comes in.

Wedding celebrants are great at officiating personalised weddings. They can be sombre, laid back, witty, and fun, depending on what you want. There are also other reasons why you should go with a wedding celebrant for your wedding. I talk about some of them in the paragraphs below.

Freedom

Choosing to go with a celebrant for your wedding gives you so much freedom. You can hold your wedding wherever you want and at whatever time you want. Do you want your wedding at a stunning private venue? How about a beautiful outdoor location?

With a wedding celebrant, you can hold your wedding at any place your heart desires. Your venue can be licensed or unlicensed; it does not matter. What matters is that the venue is what you and your partner want. I’ll show up and marry you both.

Making It Personal

As a celebrant, I’ll get to know you during your wedding planning. The connections that I make usually transcend the wedding. I become available to you from the day you contact me for advice and ideas. Getting to know you is one of the ways I get to learn how to personalise your ceremony. This will mean that your ceremony will be unique and made to fit your style.

Everyone who attends will attest to the fact that the ceremony does represent you. I am also open to your vision and wishes for your wedding. Do you want a light-hearted and fun ceremony? I can do that. If you’re the formal type or want something simple, I take that into account and deliver. It’s your special day, so your wish is basically my command.

There Are No Legal Limitations

A lot of rules bound many wedding officials here in the UK. Some wedding officials might not even be able to handle some kinds of ceremony. Locations and time could also limit them. A celebrant does not have such restrictions. You also can’t enjoy that personal relationship you would get with a celebrant with other officials. With a celebrant, you have no legal limitations when it comes to your wedding.

Affordability

There are many reasons why working with a celebrant could be more affordable. One of those is that you are not restricted to a particular venue. You can go for a more affordable venue which your celebrant will have no problem coming to. Your favourite restaurant, farm, beach, and even your back garden are not off-limits. Do you want to hold your wedding where you first laid your eyes on each other? As long as you can secure it, your celebrant can marry you there.

Dress Code

The couple often decides on the dress code of a wedding. Sometimes, however, a venue will add their own restrictions. Traditional wedding venues like churches sometimes have a thing or two to add. A wedding celebrant has no problem with your wedding dressing. They have no problem working with unique couples and are open-minded. It’s in their job description! If you decide to show up dressed as your favourite Harry Potter characters, they won’t bat an eyelid. You can also have your hair however you wish. With a celebrant, the choice is entirely yours.

Faiths and Rituals

You can bring any spiritual element you want, or none, to your wedding with a celebrant. You won’t be able to do this at most traditional venues with their ministers. Most celebrants are not affiliated to any faith in particular either.

If you are from different faiths and want to combine elements of it at your wedding, go ahead. With a celebrant, you can do just that. You can also include wedding rituals like a sand ceremony, hand binding, and candle ceremony. If you’re not spiritual and don’t want any element of spirituality at your wedding, a celebrant can also work with that.

The long and short of this is that a celebrant will make your wedding special for you. From specialised wedding arrangements to quality time, you’ll be getting the best deal. So, what do you say?

If you’re looking for a wedding celebrant around North West or anywhere in the UK, you should reach out to me. Here at Fab Ceremonies I love weddings and meeting couples planning their wedding. Together, we can plan your wedding ceremony just the way you’ve always dreamed of. Contact me today!

What makes a wedding ceremony fabulous?

Well, YOU do of course! But, so does everything else that happens in it! And of course, everybody wants a GOOD ceremony.

Including both of you, as the couple, and your guests!

The last thing you want is to be stood there bored to tears, and they don’t want to be sat there counting the chairs and windows or making excuses to go to the toilet and grabbing a quick half at the bar (although some will probably do that anyway!)

But what is it that makes a good wedding ceremony, you ask? Well, as a wedding celebrant, it’s my job to create Fab Ceremonies. So, I’m about to give you 8 fun ideas that will make your wedding ceremony the talk of your guests long after you’re back from your honeymoon!

Rituals and Symbolic Actions

Firstly, let’s talk Rituals and Symbolic Actions. Most wedding ceremonies have an exchange of rings, which is certainly a lovely symbolic moment in your wedding ceremony, accompanied by making vows to each other. But why not incorporate another symbolic ritual, as well, in your wedding that makes it unique to you? It’s great to get creative in these moments. For example, Handfasting is a lovely, colourful and visual ritual that can include some of your guests participating in.

You, the couple, hold hands so that your wrists are touching. A length of ribbon or cord is then looped around your hands. The couple make a vow or declaration at each loop, this can be incorporated with an exchange of rings. The final tie is normally done fairly loosely so that you can keep the knotted ribbon as a special symbol of your marriage. The ribbon is made up of two or more pieces of material to represent the couple, or different coloured strands that represent important parts of your relationship. You can nominate significant guests to come a include a particular ribbon to add even more meaning. Guaranteed to give your wedding ceremony impact (both for you and your guests.)

Music and singing

Everyone loves a good sing-song – and if you say you don’t, I don’t believe you! Including a sing along is a sure-fire way of having a good wedding ceremony! that feeling where everyone is singing along, and everyone’s energy is focused on the song is ELECTRIC. What’s your song?

Dancing

Bring on the dancing girls or fellas! I love a wedding ceremony with a dancing element to it. Getting your guests up and dancing you down the aisle to a salsa or Conga is a lovely way to celebrate the big moment.

Ring duty

Another great way to make your wedding ceremony out of the ordinary is to break the rules! Let someone else be responsible for the rings (sorry, Best Man, but it’s one less thing for you to worry about, isn’t it?). Why not get the children to hand them over, or your Mums or Nans? In fact, why stop at humans? Why not get your dog to be your ring bearer and bring them down the aisle?

Flower girls?

Having your grans or brothers walk down the aisle and scatter it with flowers, petals or confetti will signal to guests that they’re in for an excellent time! It’s also a lovely way of making the ceremony as personal as possible, by including the people who aren’t traditionally included in the line-up but nevertheless are very significant to you.

Personal vows

Personal vows are my absolute favourite way of making a wedding ceremony exceptional, every single time! If couples have written their own vows, it’s always the best part of the ceremony by far.

Everyone else gets involved in your love story, and it’s the most glorious thing and full of ‘ahh’s’ and wet hankies and lumps in throats! Plus, you get to enjoy the gratitude from your guests for not having to sit through the traditional vows again.

Getting your guests involved

If audience participation is your idea of hell, don’t worry. A lot of the ideas I’ve detailed above get your guests more involved anyway, just by virtue of being interesting. However, there are ways of involving your guests more directly in activities that won’t shake them to the very core.

For example, ‘warming of the rings’, where your rings are passed round your guests to bestow them with their well wishes.

A one of a kind ceremony

The best wedding ceremonies are the ones that are unique to you.

Celebrant led wedding ceremonies allow you SO much freedom with how you celebrate your love. I regularly hear guests saying that they’ve never been to a wedding this incredible and unforgettable.
